it and the obama campaign should expect this as well because that's what happens this time of year. in 2007 we were going six months at this stage, or six months into the campaign four years ago at this stage. we were focused on iowa. we believed we had to win iowa to have a shot at the nomination. if we lost, we would have some problems. there was a much more narrow path to the nomination. so everyone was really focused on the four early states, which included new hampshire, south carolina, new hampshire as well. things were really starting to happen in september. starting to see things come together after many months. tuneups for thel collaps race that's 12 weeks away. a car you have on labor day is the car you'll drive through the primary. so you are getting people into positions. it was late september when this poll dropped. it was the same one we had been seeing a couple months, but it showed hillary clinton ahead by 47% to 23% at. it was a cnn poll and she was winning by at least 20 points or maybe 25 points. apple dropped into headquarters like a grenade. there was something that happened in

to the other guy. the democrats were in control for four years, two under bush and two under obama, yet it was all bush's fault and nobody takes responsibility. that's the problem. the voters need to take responsibility and get rid of every one of the incumbents, it's maybe not in this election, but if they don't get this country straightened out and get the economy straightened out, but just take one election in two years, if it's not better, get rid of every one of them and they will finally get the message. host: let's look at some national news stories. this story from the new york times -- and this other story in the times -- looking at other international news stories on long lines of what our last caller was talking about, whether international news is getting attention. and this in the washington post -- the debate tomorrow night will focus on domestic issues. what would you be listening for? if you're not going to watch, why? monty writes -- in new orleans on the republican line, eustice. caller: good morning. i don't know how anything can change. romney would have to come up w

: there is no question -- president obama had a jobs bill last year. the republicans had no use for it. it was put aside because they did not want to have the present have a success. they were not interested in creating jobs. do they have a jobs plan? there is no record that cutting tax creates jobs. i do think the democrats need to be bolder and put forward many more ideas about how to create jobs. in my mind the democratic party is a coalition of interest. the republican party i think will possibly expire because it has become so extremist. it risks extinction in a country going through such demographic shifts. it is primarily a white, older party to that. it doesn't understand how they will operate. they will throw as much money and do the vote suppression which about 11 courts have said we're not going to buy into the idea of bogus voter fraud to impair the greatest rights america has. host: we have 10 students on the bus. all the journalism students are double majors. a quick comment from you as an editor who hires journalists. guest: i think that is a great idea. many journalism schools are going

be taken advantage of. >> senator? >> well gwen, two years ago barack obama warned about the sub prime mortgage crisis. john mccain said shortly after that in december he was surprised there was a sub prime mortgage problem. john mccain while barack obama was warning about what we had to do was literally giving an interview to "the wall street journal" saying that i'm always for cutting regulations. we let wall street run wild. john mccain and he's a good man, but john mccain thought the answer is that tried and true republican response, deregulate, deregulate. so what you had is you had overwhelming "deregulation." you had actually the belief that wall street could self-regulate itself. and while barack obama was talking about reinstating those regulations, john on 20 different occasions in the previous year and a half called for more deregulation. as a matter of fact, john recently wrote an article in a major magazine saying that he wants to do for the health care industry deregulate it and let the free market move like he did for the banking industry. so deregulation was the promise

about that obama had to brag about in the debate another night. he can't do anything his four years. he's got to go back to the clinton era. the reason the clinton era office is prosperous it wasn't prosperous the first four years of the clinton administration. oh no. it was when the republican congress came in beginning in january of 1995 passing welfare reform, fantastic criminal law provisions, we slipped a tax cut in. that was the republican congress driving the bus and clinton signing what was sent to him. >> a.a. mom writes to you on twitter. it's not about the 60's. it's about the current g.o.p. response to the first black president. total rejection, they say, based race. >> um, the idea that what people don't like about obama is his race is preposterous! more white people voted for obama in 2008 than any democratic president in nearly 40 years. and by the way, where was all this love for blacks in high public positions when clarence thomas wasdom nominated to the supreme court? how about when colin powell was made the first black secretary of state or condoleezza rice the first

being in denial. >> we did not go through the decade of george w. bush and the last four years of rock obama, but what they have had to deal with, in fairness, is 9/11, a couple of wars that require a lot of spending, the tax cuts of george bush -- i am not sure where you stood on those, but they did eat into the amount of money we had to spend -- and then the recession, which was some say close to a depression. did that time prevent us from being able to make deficits and debt a top priority? >> it should not have. it could have, but it should not have come out if people were thinking clearly, if they were well educated, if they even understood this whole damn thing, which they do not. if you say what percentage of the american people understand this, i would say it is a very low number. it to be everybody, and everybody should say this is my country. people should be very active about not letting anything damaged our country. the one thing we have not mentioned at all, there is no question at all in my mind, if we keep going this way, some nation is going to head over here to take us
